Microsoft has announced a new cloud service, called Office 365, which will include various Office desktop software as well Office Web Apps, online at www.office365.com . The service will also include SharePoint, Exchange and Lynch. It will officially go online next year, though beta testing opens now.
The hosted software for business is not free, and is available for small businesses, professionals and small companies with fewer than 25 employees, starting from $6 per user per month. This will include only web-based Office software. Office 365 for enterprises for midsize and large businesses, will start at $2 per user per month for basic e-mail, ranging up to $24 per user per month for the complete deal, including the full Office Professional Plus desktop suite, communications server tools, online versions of the desktop software, voicemail, enterprise social networking, instant messaging, SharePoint, Exchange, Web portals, extra-nets, voice conferencing, Web conferencing, 24x7 phone support, and on-premises licenses.

Microsoft is obviously taking on Google Apps, and to be fair, Google offers a free service for consumers and small businesses with Google Docs and Gmail. Google Apps also has a paid business version, for $50 per user per year. Microsoft previously retailed its Business Productivity Online Suite for $120 per user per year, so the varying price points for different sizes of businesses.

According to Microsoft Office president Kurt DelBene:
"Moving to the cloud with Office 365 means people don’t have to change the way they work, because [the suite] works with the most popular browsers, smartphones and desktop applications people use today."
“With Office 365, your local bakery can get enterprise-caliber software and services for the first time, while a multinational pharmaceutical company can reduce costs and more easily stay current with the latest innovations. People can focus on their business, while we and our partners take care of the technology."

Western Digital launched 2.5TB and 3TB internal hard disc drives in India
Western Digital has launched 2.5TB and 3TB HDD versions of the WD Caviar Green in India, priced at Rs. 8,300 and Rs. 10,700 respectively. The two drives feature the WD's Green Power Technology, which will apparently reduce power consumption, lowers operating temperatures, increase reliability, and decrease acoustical noise.
Designed as "next-generation PC storage" for 64-bit operating systems, the WD Caviar Green 2.5TB and 3TB hard disc drives can also be used as secondary external storage in "legacy 32-bit systems”. The drives come bundled with an Advanced Host Controller Interface (AHCI)-compliant Host Bus Adapter (HBA), which seemingly enable the operating system to use a known driver with correct support for large capacity drives, and solve the previous 2.19 TB drive barrier, on Windows 7 and Vista operating systems.
More information can be found on Western Digital website.
Mozilla reveals Web app store plans
Mozilla has detailed plans for an "open web ecosystem" that will function across browsers.
Mozilla has released a trial product and technical specifications detailing its planned Web app store. The open source company “Mozilla” says it intends to make its store’s apps available for “any modern desktop or mobile browser,” quoting Internet Explorer 8, Chrome 6, Safari 5, and, of course, its own Firefox 3.6 as examples of “modern” browsers.“The open Web is a great platform for rich applications,” Mozilla VP of Products, Jay Sullivan said in a blog post. “It would be even better if it had additional capabilities to ease discovery, acquisition, installation and use of apps, while also enabling monetization for developers.”
The post goes on to list parameters for developing apps for the store, including the use of established Web technologies (HTML, CSS, and JavaScript) and cross-browser compatibility, with an additional rule prohibiting users from being charged for porting an already purchased app on to multiple browsers. Mozilla also makes clear its intention to allow for both free and paid apps, and plans to restrict any third party from acting as a “gatekeeper” between developers and users.
Mozilla originally announced the app store plan back in May, around the same time Google was voicing intentions to release its own Chrome Web App Store, which is expected to be launched soon.

WebOS 2.0 pictures leaked
HP is arranging the tracks to become a bigger player in the mobile world by tapping the expertise of its latest acquisition, Palm, for a new edition of WebOS. While the Palm Pre was a solid phone, it failed to deliver on the hype, and it’s been ages since HP has made any sort of dent in the mobile industry. Together they’re looking to take a stand against Apple and RIM with WebOS 2.0, which is expected to be featured on upcoming HP smartphones and tablets.
The screenshots showcase some new features of WebOS 2.0, including an expanded universal search, a new dialer, and a new multi-tasking feature called “stacks.” New services that look to be integrated into WebOS 2.0 include MobileMe, Google Docs, Facebook, LinkDln and Dropbox.

Facebook Or Online ‘friend’ may be a federal agent
A new report unveils that the government has been briefly monitoring social networking sites, Facebook, MySpace , Orkut and Twitter.
It’s clever to watch what you say, and cleverer to watch what you say online, because you never know who might read it. In answer to a Freedom of Information request (FOIA), the government released documents unveiling that social networking sites are being deeply monitored. According to the report by the Electronic Frontier Foundation, social sites like Facebook, MySpace, Twitter, and Flickr were targeted, as well as Wikipedia, Craigslist, many political commentary sites, and NPR, among others.
One document reveals widespread information collecting around the time of the 2009 inauguration of President Obama: “Narcissistic tendencies in many people fuel a need to have a large group of ‘friends’ link to their pages, and many of these people accept cyber-friends that they don’t even know. This provides an excellent vantage point for FDNS to observe the daily life of beneficiaries and petitioners who are suspected of fake activities.”
While some use of social media to monitor fraud and security can be defensible, the EFF is worries that such extensive monitoring could turn a harmless, offhand status update into a blown out investigation.
“While there have been some reports in the past year of similar social network monitoring for large-scale public events,” said the EFF, “to date the public has not seen such detailed information about the government’s approach to monitoring, especially on its data protection practices. As our FOIA lawsuit continues, we hope to learn more about such activities and help bring further transparency and accountability to the ways in which government agencies and law implementation officials collect and analyze information about us online.”
Are you worried about the government stretching its authority and over-monitoring tweets and updates? Or is this a good thing, as it could potentially help deal with or prevent a disaster?

Providing full access to the Android Market, the Videocon Zeus (V7500) also comes with a whole bunch of preloaded applications as well as an 8GB microSD card, all at a rather attractive price of `. 12,900. At that price, you can't help but compare it to the LG Optimus GT540, another Android full-touch phone that was released just over a month ago, priced at `. 12,990. The GT540 currently however is based on Android 1.6, though it will support an upgrade to Android 2.1.
The Zeus ships with 2.1, and is powered by a 600MHz Qualcomm processor. Other specifications include a 3.2-inch multi-touch screen, 5MP camera, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, A-GPS, and push mail. The other four phones have sketchy details, and no prices:

Skype 5 dials up Facebook integration
Skype 5 for Windows is out of beta, allowing Facebook users to post status updates, comments, and like items from directly within Skype.
Leading VoIP service Skype has officially launched Skype 5 for Windows, which makes the real-time chatting application more social than ever by integrating with Facebook. Skype users will be able to act together with Facebook friends and communities right within the Skype application, posting status updates and comments, liking items, and call & SMS their Facebook friends.
Skype 5 integrates a news feed of status messages from Facebook friends who are using Skype, and enables users to set their own Facebook status using a feature called “mood messages.” The services rely on users linking their Facebook account to their Skype account; at that point, any friend who has made their phone number available on Facebook can be called directly from Skype.
In addition to new social features, Skype 5 also aims to further expose some long-standing but not-as-widely-used features of the service via a Skype Home tab, including screen sharing, SMS, file sharing, and more. A new search feature automatically shifts friends to the top of results listings, and Skype says the new version of the applicationoffers improved call quality and is less likely to drop calls
Skype is also expanding its group video calling service, enabling support for up to 10 participants in a single video chat although the group video calling feature is still in beta, and Skype envisions eventually charging for it separately as an add-on service. Skype has claimed that more than one third of the calls it currently handles are now video calls and anticipates video calls will eventually become the norm.
The Skype client application remains free, and Skype-to-Skype calling remains free; however, users must pay to connect to mobile phones and traditional landline phones, albeit at rates that are usually substantially lower than traditional phone carriers. Skype says a version of Skype 5 for Mac OS X will be available soon.
