A new Call of Duty: Black Ops trailer shows off the new online Wager mode, and more details on the multiplayer have been teased.
When people think of the Call of Duty franchise, the first thought tends to be of the online multiplayer. The campaigns have generally been solid, but the real heart and soul of the games is the online aspect. It is a lesson that Activision knows, and one that Treyarch, intends to show that they understand as well.
One way that Treyarch intends to prove that Black Ops should be your go-to online first-person-shooter game is by introducing new game modes to compliment the traditional games that people have come to expect. The first of these game modes to be announced is the “Wager Matches,” which allow players to gamble the in-game currency they have earned, in four game types. The Wager Matches are a free-for-all type of game; if you finish in the top three, you win points. If not, you lose everything you wagered. The Wager Match game types are:
One in the Chamber- This gametype begins with every player having one single bullet, their melee attack and three lives. For each kill you receive a new bullet, for each miss you resort to melee.
Sticks and Stones- You begin with a crossbow, a ballistic knife and a tomahawk. If you hit a player with the tomahawk, that player is instantly bankrupted.
Gun Game- You begin the game with a pistol, but for each kill you are awarded a more powerful weapon. If you are knifed, you drop down one level. The winner is the first to progress through each of the 20 levels of weapons.
Sharp Shooter- Each player begins with a randomly selected weapon for a set period of time. After that time expires, every weapon changes to another random selection.
The Wager Matches came from ideas taken from the Call of Duty online community, and will use CoD Points. These CP are used to purchase new weapons, killstreaks and perks, but they are separate from the experience points you earn for playing the multiplayer and completing challenges. Check out the trailer below and be prepared to spend a lot of time winning and losing the currency you earn.
Last night, Activision also demoed the multiplayer, and according to Kotaku, you can expect all the familiar game modes, plus a few extras. Making a return are the traditional game types including: Team Deathmatch, Capture the Flag, Free-For-All, Search-and-Destroy, Headquarters and other games.
