Each excursion into the field is a memory, and these missions slowly come together to build momentum when each interrogation cutscene puts another bit of the puzzle in area. It's not a pretty original mechanic, but it gives a coherent context towards action, and a few powerful characters and dramatic moments give situation some genuine intrigue. The blurry edges of one's consciousness conceal information that has to come to light, plus the erratic visual effects along with eerie audio echoes of which accompany your interrogations at times bleed into your assignment memories, which creates a fantastic tone of uncertainty of which plays out in unexpected and satisfying ways.
