SmartCam 1.4 [Download of the Week]

SmartCam is an application which allows one to make use of their mobile phone camera as a webcam. It will make your mobile phone camera appear as a normal webcam on your system and it can be used transparently by any application which needs a webcap. All it requires, is either a Bluetooth or WiFi connectivity in your devices, and a phone which runs either Symbian, Windows mobile, or one which supports Java. The software works on both Windows and Linux.

The software comes in two parts for the two systems (the PC and the mobile). The user has to download both parts, depending on which operating system they have on their computer and on the mobile phone - and any combination of aforementioned supported OSes works fine.

The setup process may be confusing to some, so here's a step by step guide. First, you need to install the PC part of the software on your Windows/Linux system. Then you need to install the mobile client of the software on your Symbian/Windows/Java mobile. At this point you will need a bluetooth/wireless connectivity option; although both work great, it is easier to setup over Bluetooth. Just start the client on both your computer and mobile, then search for devices from the mobile. Make sure your computer's bluetooth is 'visible' and both in the clients, the connectivity is set to be 'Bluetooth'. For phones which have a better camera, and need more bandwidth to stream a higher resolution video to the PC - WiFi is a better option for sure. All you need to do is to mention the computer's (server) name in the device and select a port to connect to (leave default but same value in both the clients). Now press connect. It's not as hard as it sounds here.
After you've set up the system, you will see your video in the PC-client. It will work just like a webcam and will be recognized by by your applications as one. Skype, for example, will run the PC client automatically when you log in - all you have to do is to connect the phone. Same for other chat clients / IM apps. If you don't want to video-chat anymore or need to close the feed, just close the PC client and exit from the mobile client. Clicking disconnect is an option, but it disconnects your device from the bluetooth pairing if you are connected to PC suites or in other apps.

SmartCam will let you select the video quality in the device and the codec/compression selection in the PC client. The latter is a nice feature, which compresses the video with available codecs before sending it online, reducing the size of the stream (note: compression will introduce some milisec latency/delay - if it's untolerable then choose no compression). The status bar gives the related streaming statistics.

If you have a lower end smart-phones, the video capabilities of your mobile camera likely go unused due to poor quality, but you have after all paid for it. While the mobile video camera may not be capable of capturing video at brilliant quality, it's not too bad as a webcam simply for video chatting. So, if you are a desktop user, without a webcam or have laptop with a missing or malfunctioning webcam then SmartCam is THE choice for you.

SmartCam is not very feature rich, it serves one purpose and serves it well. The simplicity keeps it light on the system and small in size. Even if there are some alternatives for the same purpose (e.g. WWIGO or the paid ones, such as Mobiola WebCam etc.), none of them supports all these PC/mobile operating systems and/or is as simple as SmartCam. Moreover, it is a free and open source project hosted at sourceforge. The latest version of SmartCam is 1.4. All the project files and source can be downloaded from here.

TV-Browser 2.7.5 [Download of the Day]

TV-Browser is a java based free Electronic Programmable Guide (EPG) that has the potential to extend its feature list by the addition of freely available plugins. It has a lightweight setup file of size 2.8MB, which takes up to 11MB space on the hard drive during extraction or installation of the software. The installation provides you the option to disable or enable the installation of data service files and plugins. The installation process hardly took us about 30 seconds to complete and prompted us to tick the checkbox to run the TV-Browser for the first time, before clicking on the finish button.

On running the TV-Browser for the first time, we were taken to the welcome screen with the option to use the setup assistant to configure the TV-Browser settings or cancel it. The setup assistant prompts you to ensure that the computer is connected to the internet, so that the TV-listings could be downloaded before proceeding ahead with the setup. If your service provider has offered you a proxy server connection, then you would require to fill up the details, else you should proceed by clicking on next. It hardly took a few seconds to analyze and validate internet connection by displaying the message “Network Test Successful”. Hence it really impressed us with its quick & easy interface. Then we were prompted to continue by clicking next, to download the TV channel listings, icons and schedules. The setup identified 31 channels and started processing the channel listings and schedules automatically. Meanwhile, it also validated the channel groups and group radio connections.
The channel group validation process took a while before presenting us the complete list of downloaded channels. Then you could add a channel to or delete a channel from the subscription using the arrow keys. However, we noticed that some channels did not have their unique channel logo icons downloaded and instead, the default TV-Browser icon was substituted in their place. If a user wished to change the default icon, he could do so by simply selecting the channel and clicking on configure selected channels button. Then click on the custom channel icon button. Once you have customized the channel selection and channel icons, you could proceed with the setup by clicking next.
Now, you are offered the option of downloading program pictures wherever available. By default, the setup prompts you to automatically download the program pictures that are scheduled to run in the evening between 6:00PM and 11:00PM. You may also choose to download pictures for day programs & night programs or simply choose 'download pictures for all programs' option. Then click on next to view the successfully completed setting up the TV-Browser for the first time message and then click on finish to close the setup assistant.
Immediately after closing the setup assistant, you are prompted to update the TV-channel listings, as no TV listings are available for the day. So, click on the “Update Now” button, and you are provided the option to choose the data sources, enable automatic update or TV-Browser startup update or recurrent update based on your priority. Also, you can choose the time or for how many days you want to download the TV-listings (Example: today, up to tomorrow, next 2 days etc.).
Once you have setup the priorities, click on update now button. Then you are prompted to accept the terms & conditions of use. You proceed by clicking “I agree” twice and the TV-listings download screen is displayed. Once the download is finished, you get the message: “The update of the TV database is ready”. Now, click on OK button and you are done. At this point, a pop-up window prompts you to download the updates for the installed plugins. Select the installed plugin from the list and click on download selected plugins button. You are prompted to restart the TV-Browser for the plugins installation to complete and changes to take effect. That completes the walkthrough for the entire TV-Browser setup, including installation and usage.
Overall, we found this tool very intuitive & dynamic, providing a convenient way to configure all the TV-channel subscriptions, TV program listings and schedules efficiently. Also, being a free open source software, it truly grabs your attention as a user-friendly and feature-rich software!

AutoHotkey 1.0.48.05 [Download of the Day]

AutoHotkey is an incredibly lightweight open-source utility that allows users to assign hotkeys and macro actions to almost any operation in Windows. Powerful, AutoHotkey can really save time and tedious clicking, especially for repetitive or complex operations in your daily computer experience. Users will find they’ve extremely easy access to various functions and programs, and can simply remap keys on their mouses, joysticks/gamepads, and keyboards.
There are plenty of great features to be found within the 1.95MB download/2.5MB installed AutoHotkey software, and the degree of customizability, while expected for this sort of software, is still remarkable. Based on scripting similar in syntax to BASIC, AutoHotkey gives both expert users a wide range of functions, and makes it really simple for novice users with its macro recorder and syntax-checker.
Here are some of the major command sets and assistance users can use:
  • Environment management

  • File, directory and disk management

  • Flow of Control

  • Functions

  • GUI, MsgBox, InputBox and others

  • Keyboard control

  • Mouse control

  • Math commands

  • Misc commands

  • Process management

  • Registry management

  • Sound commands

  • String managment

  • Window management

Scripts will be executed by the program, and contain a series of user-defined commands, which can also include hotkeys and hotstrings (text that will expand when abbreviated, or also perform an action). A simple example is given below:
To create a new script:
1. Right-click an empty spot on your desktop or in a folder of your choice.

2. In the menu that appears, select New -> AutoHotkey Script.

3. Type a name for the file, ensuring that it ends in .ahk. For example: Test.ahk

4. Right-click the file and choose Edit Script.

5. On a new blank line, type the following:

6. #space::Run www.google.com

7. Save and close the file

8. Double-click the file to load the script

9. Press hotkey (Windows button and space bar) to execute it

Now # refers to the Windows button, and space to the space bar. This results in www.google.com being opened by your default browser whenever you press the Windows button in conjunction with the space bar. Just as simply, you could access a program, a document, and email address, simply substituting www.google.com with the relevant path/address when using the Run command.
There's plenty a user can do, from expanding abbreviations to creating custom data-entry forms, user interfaces, and menu bars, even turning scripts into EXE files, or making them respond to remote control input, and much more. Its capabilities are limitless. As anyone who’s had any hands-on programming experience will now, anything is possible, dependant only on the limits of your ingenuity. If comprehension = 0, then run terminate.bat

FindThatFont! 1.0 [Download of the Day]

Mozilla's platform is the base for a number of amazing applications from the obvious Firefox and Thunderbird, to Songbird and Instantbird. FindThatFont! Is another brilliant applications which uses Mozilla's XULRunner platform as a base.
As the name suggests, this application helps you locate the font you are looking for by displaying them in a well categorized and presented catalog.
It is rare that you will get an idea of what a font is like simply by reading the name, so FindThatFont! not only lists all you fonts, but also displays a sample of each font with it. The sample could by any one of the included pangrams, or a text of your choosing. With a single click of a toolbar button, you can have all your fonts displayed in boldface, italicized or in capitals. You can even select a font size to render all the fonts in.
If you have a rather large collection of fonts you will be pleased to know that FindThatFont! has a search feature which can instantly filter your fonts based on a keyword you specify. However chances are you will find the categorization of fonts done by the application much more useful. FindThatFont! Automatically categorizes you fonts under classes such as “Condensed”, “Comic”, “Handwritten”, “Graffiti”, “Heavy”, “Futuristic” and many more, and allows you to browse your entire collection, or any by class, so you can get a more limited view of only the kind of fonts you are looking for.
Another great feature is that FindThatFont! lets you mark fonts as favorites using a “star” so it is easy to locate the fonts you use frequently in a separate list.
Not all fonts have classes assigned to them, since FindThatFont! only comes with categorizations for a some popular fonts (around 250 of them), and other fonts show up in the uncategorized list. If you have installed a lot of third-party fonts these will most probably be uncategorized. You can – if you can spare the time – manually categorize your font collection, which is sure to pay off in the long run. This font categorization that you do once can be exported to an “ini” file and then imported into another computer which has the same fonts installed.
FindThatFont! can also generate an HTML file with samples of all your fonts, or print such a list directly.
Since FindThatFont! is based on Mozilla's XULRunner platform, it is as extensible as Firefox, which means you can install addons for FindThatFont! which can add or improve its features. Currently there is only one extension available, which adds a preview window with the currently selected font applied to a text block, or the full character-code view of the font.
