Both sides lost their first two matches in the pool and only the most extreme of optimists would give them a chance of pulling it back and claiming a place at the 2010 World Cup in South Africa.
For Malawi it does still present the opportunity of an extremely rare appearance at the continental showpiece though, having only ever appeared once, some 25 years ago in 1984.
They have to battle a –6 goal-difference, courtesy of their 5-0 hammering at the hand of Cote d’Ivoire in their opening group match in March, meaning defeat here would leave them with a mountain to climb to get to Angola.
Guinea will be playing their first game under new head coach Titi Camara, who took over from Frenchman Robert Nouzaret after the home defeat to the Ivorians earlier in the month and he will be desperate to lift the spirits of the side with a win.
Counting in their favour is the fact that they have never lost to Malawi in four previous meetings, with two wins and two draws. The last meeting was in a 2006 World Cup qualifier in Conakry which Guinea won 3-1.
