Motally, a San Francisco-based firm, was established in 2008 by Arte Merritt, a former Yahoo Mobile employee, to collect and analyse data on mobile devices, which is pivotal for Nokia as it attempts to up the ante in the smartphone wars against Apple and Google.
It has applied for a number of patents relating to its analytics technology, which, if granted, will also be acquired by Nokia.
Motally only has eight people working for it, but they will join Nokia's team. The fact that Motally is such a small company suggests that it must have been doing something right to garner Nokia's attention.
Nokia plans to adapt Motally's analytics code so that it will work for Qt, Symbian, Meego, and Java developers. It also plans to continue serving Motally's existing customer base, which includes a number of newspapers, research firms, and mobile companies.
“The acquisition underpins Nokia's drive to deliver in-application and mobile web browsing analytics to Ovi's growing, global eco-system of developers and publishers, enabling partners to better connect with their customers and optimize and monetize their offering,” said Marco Argenti, Vice President of Media at Nokia.
Financial details of the acquisition were not disclosed. The deal is expected to close within the third quarter of 2010.
