Acer's latest Aspire One puts a new spin on netbooks: it can boot into either Windows XP or Google's Android mobile operating system.
At the Taipei Computer Applications Show this week, computer maker Acer has taken the wraps off yet another Aspire One netbook—the Acer Aspire One AOD255. But this one has a new trick: it runs both Windows XP and Google Android as its operating system. Android serves as a fast-booting OS for basic tasks, while Windows XP can be used as a primary operating system that (of course) can run a wide range of Windows software. An Acer Confirmation Manager enables user to choose which operating system will launch at startup.
Otherwise, the Acer Aspire One AOD255 is a fairly run-of-the-mill netbook, featuring an Intel Atom D450 processor, a 10.1-inch display, 1 GB of RAM, and a 160 GB hard drive. The unit will ship with a three-cell battery by default, but a six-cell battery will be available as an option.
Acer is offering the Acer Aspire One AOD255 to show attendees for NT$9,500 (about US$300), but the list price for the machine is NT$11,900, or about $375. However, right now, Taipei Computer Applications Show is the only place to set hands on the unit: Acer has not announced when or howit plans to bring the machine to market.
